DIAMOND PEST PRO EXTERMINATORS OF THE CAROLINAS

TYPES OF TERMITES IN THE CAROLINAS

Termites are active North and South Carolina and your home needs to be protected against them. As the professionals, we know the termite species your home may be facing and how to quickly eradicate them. The types of termites we most commonly find in the Carolinas are:

  • Drywood termites:- Drywood termites chew tunnels inside wooden beams and other structures made of wood, weakening them from the inside out. These pests can enter your home through infested furniture or exposed wood.

  • Subterranean termites:- this species live underground and enters your home by building mud tubes from the ground to exposed wood. Subterranean can remain in your home undetected for years, causing destruction. Early detection by a pest professional is important to eliminate the subterranean species.

  • Formosan termites: The Formosan termite has been identified in 30 counties in the eastern half of Texas, including Collin, Denton, and Tarrant counties. The Formosan termite flocks to sources of wood, especially moist wood. This species is one of the most destructive termite species in the United States because they can multiply and destroy wood structures faster than other native subterranean species.

A full evaluation of our findings to determine if there is a current infestation, any warning signs for potential termite activity, or signs of previous termite damage.

A customized treatment plan that targets the specific needs of your home.

Implementation of our top-notch services to eliminate all termites currently present and protect your home against their return!

Termites vs. Flying Ants

Colonies of ants and termites both produce winged reproductives that fly out to start new colonies. The key way to distinguish between winged ants and winged termites is by examining the wings. Termite swarmers have wings that are all the same size. Ants have hind wings that are much smaller than the front wings. Collect a few and have one of our certified applicators identify them when we come out to treat your home if you want to be sure.

THREAT OF TERMITES

It’s hard to imagine that something so small can wreak so much havoc. The termites found in North and South Carolina are some of the most aggressive in the country with three main species: subterranean termites, drywood termites, and Formosan termites (a subspecies of subterranean). These termites work 24/7 and at incredibly quick rates. In fact, a colony can eat through a foot of 2×4 in a matter of months. Is your house made of brick or concrete? You’re still not off the hook. Most of these homes are still attached to wooden frames, and the cellulose that termites love can be found in other places in your home such as drywall, wallpaper, and wooden furniture. Because of their small size, it’s quite easy for termites to find their way in your home.

Termite Treatment Methods

Trelona Advance®

Diamond Pest Control is a Certified Trelona® Specialist, authorized to install the Trelona® termite colony elimination system and advanced termite bait stations. We install this integrated baiting and monitoring system to address existing subterranean termite problems and also provide ongoing protection against these wood-destroying insects.

How it works: Trelona® uses cellulose-based bait that offers an alternative meal for termites, strategically placed to catch them as they approach your home. Once termites begin to target the bait stations instead, they attract the rest of the colony by laying pheromone tracks. The chemical used in Trelona® inhibits the molting process (a stage of reproduction) that will prevent the termite colony from growing and eventually die off. Trelona® is the only termite product awarded the EPA’s Presidential Green Chemistry Award for being environmentally responsible and has protected United States landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, Independence Hall, and even the White House.

Spot Treatment
While Trelona® is ideal for preventing termites in the first place, there are other methods of spot treating, or localized treatments, that can be used if you are already experiencing issues. This type of treatment can be either liquid or foam, and is injected into areas where termite infestations are suspected or where damage has occurred. Our technicians will analyze your situation and the level of risk you are facing to determine the best termite treatment method for you. This analysis is based on what type of termite you may be dealing with, how severe a current infestation is, and how at risk you are for termites to invade.

HERE ARE A FEW SIGNS OF TERMITE ACTIVITY:

SWARMING

Termite colonies can mature in 3-5 years and begin to produce swarmers (winged termites). Swarming happens during the day, particularly on warm days after a Carolina downpour. Swarmers are usually found near tree stumps and landscape timbers. This doesn’t mean your house is infested, but it serves as a reminder that termites do live around us. When swarming happens inside your home, it typically means you have an infestation somewhere in your house.

MUD TUBES

Termites can either funnel through the soil, wood, or pencil size “mud tubes” where they build soil. You often find these tubes on foundation walls, floor joists, or other parts of your house. Tubes may also hang from the floor system or be seen protruding from cracks between boards and beams. Termites may also chew through sheetrock on walls or ceilings. If you happen to find an empty mud tube, that doesn’t mean the termites are gone, they may have just left this particular tube.

TERMITE DAMAGE

We tend to think of termites as only eating wood. However, termites feed on about everything that contains cellulose, which is the main ingredient in wood. While termites are foraging and feeding, they may tunnel through non-cellulosic materials; such as plastic and foam board. In reality, the amount of damage that termites can cause depends on various factors. Due to the weather in North and South Carolina, termite activity can carry out through the entire year.
